It’s a bee.. no it’s a hummingbird, no..it’s a moth that flies like a hummingbird and looks like a bee!

Thursday, Dylan, Ariana and I went to Lakeland park so the children could ride their bikes and feed the resident geese. We were playing and looking at the plants when suddenly I saw the above insect. I thought to myself, my gosh, that is the longest bee I have ever seen. On closer inspection I realized I was seeing an insect I had only heard of and never seen in person, Hemaris diffinis, a Cloudberry Clearwing Moth, sometimes called a Bumble Bee Moth! Click this link if you would like to learn more about this fuzzy moth!

We had fun feeding the geese

You have some pretty cool looking insects in Illinois! I have never seen one like that. We have the white sphinx moth that is sometimes called the hummingbird moth. I always learn something new with you, CC! xxoo Nancy

I have been seeing these where I work, while mowing, and wandered what they were. Thanks for the clarification. So I am not crazy, I would describe these to co-workers and they would look at me weird. They really love our butterfly bushes. (Southern Oklahoma)
