i feel compelled to encourage my friends to watch this movie. it might change your life. at the least, it will move you with the compassion that is the running theme of this movie. if you have ever hurt someone by accident, in any way, you understand what it means to wish you could atone. i don't want to say too much about this movie as i think it is best to go into viewing it with no preconceived notions. if you do watch it, please let me know. i personally think the acting was intense and the actors drew me right into their lives. the themes of love, loss, redemption, compassion, and guilt all makes for one of the finest films i have ever seen. the title meaning is revealed at the end. when you watch it please pay close attention to will smith's face during the film. i don't believe i have ever seen an actor live the part in a more convincing manner in my life! this film and its actors should have walked away with oscars. please consider watching it, i am dying to talk about it with someone! hugs :)

Believe it or not, the Herbal Hubby and I go to a lot of movies and this was one of them. I saw it when it first came out, but it was all of those adjectives you used! I do remember how Will Smith's face changed during the movie. It was a very good film and I think didn't get enough good press because it is very emotional and introspective. Not something the media is good accepting. I'm not sure I made sense, but like you we thought it was very intense and thought provoking.
oh how cool! glad you saw it and agreed with me on how emotionally intense it was! you are making perfect sense nancy! the movie is like that. you just get so many feeling stirred up watching it. i tell you what, anyone who watched it would surely never want to be using their cell phones/blackberries again while driving i would think! i don't know for me i guess it really was like i just got it! i assume guilt, whether deservedly or not, so easily, i guess i just really empathized with the guilt he felt and could fully realize the brilliance of the plan he had devised for atonement. i cried like a baby when he was telling rosario that he loved her and was talking about children, marriage etc. i really felt like if her doctor would have given her a good prognosis, that love for her would have made him abandon his final plan. i guess the bit with the face is all during the movie it seemed as if he had glints of tears in his eyes so often, that afterwards, i realized, that what we were seeing was that after he had helped 5 people( without having to make the final sacrifice), that he was starting to feel a bit better about himself, and fighting the tears daily, in regards to the final redemption. oh heavens, i could blather on and on, but as you say, most film goers are looking for something not as thought provoking. i could just feel his pain so much the movie has just haunted me! thanks for sharing with me nancy. did you see his film in pursuit of happyness? i adored it also!! big hugs to you my friend:)
We mostly see Will Smith's non-action movies. We did see the Pursuit of Happyness. I think American moviegoers want an escape and not have to think about a plot. They just want violence or action or stupidity as we say around here! I have told the Herbal Husband that they aren't marketing to us anymore! LOL! He has finally gotten it! Sometimes it goes lost in translation here! LOL! A Big Hug back. ;>}
