making homemade vinegar and mothers

have you ever wondered about making your own vinegars? we all know about apple cider vinegar, but did you know you can make it from many others things? i have never made any sort of vinegar from scratch so i was excited to find this link for making homemade vinegar.  how about vinegar from wine? well, here is another site. now i haven’t done these things folks, just passing the info on. i will let you know when i do try though:) if any of you are already making your own vinegars, please share through the comment section with either a link to your blog post, or other site, or just by telling us:) i couldn’t wait to share this in case someone other than me was wondering just how to get around buying vinegar:) oxymels are one of my fav ways to use herbs so making my own vinegar would be handy. i need to get brave enough to learn to make my own alcohol for tinctures. not sure whether mead would have a high enough alcohol content. anyone know?

Hi Leslie, thank you for sharing and posting that link. I have tried to make pineapple vinegar before, but it was unsuccessful. I'm not sure where I went wrong, but it didn't turn out. There were a few tips I found on the link you posted, so I'll probably try it again.
Have a wonderful day!

i will check out those links...i just discovered a huge mother in my acv bottle...and the funny thing is, it's just a cheapy bottle of the pasteurized stuff from the grocery store. i was just going to add it to a container of apple cider and see what happens. i use it for washing my hair so i'm not concerned about the healthful qualities. :D

Ooh, thanks for the links Leslie! I have flavored store bought vinegars with blueberry, basil and raspberry, but it would be really cool to make my own vinegar.

Hi Leslie ~ I accidentally made red wine vinegar a couple of years ago (LOL). I was making wine from some grapes that a friend gave me , I made some pretty tasty wine but the last batch I was late to strain it and it fermented to vinegar, , it actually grew a Mother too , although I didn't add yeast or a mother starter. I guess the conditions and temp. were just right. I'm still using it , but plan to make more this year , using the mother. Glad you posted about homemade vinegars , I need to do more research and get started.

HI Leslie, thanks for the link to making vinegar. I had never even thought about making it - what an easy process!

I too have been thinking about making my own alcohol for tinctures but it does seem like a it of a daunting process. But then, vodka is really expensive...so maybe sometime soon I'll get up the courage to do it.

And hello to another Anke :) not a name you see very often.

Now how did I miss this posting? Anyway, homemade vinegar sounds pretty interesting. Never tried it although I did have a bottle of wine that had turned to vinegar. Certainly did not want to drink that! I'll have to check out the link that you gave us.
Take Care!

Ok, here is a family story about a wonderful "mother" I had floating in a huge jug of vinegar on the make.

My husband's Aunt Jean saw it, became "disgusted" and threw it away!!! The same woman saw my frozen flowers inside ice cubes (I was teaching an herb class and was taking good time to freeze flower cubes) and she thought something had "dropped into the trays" so she tossed them all in the sink. I arrived home after they were beyond saving. YIKES.
