the other day i saw some boys running through the neighborhood with a baby bird in their hands. i went dashing out to explain to them that fledglings run around on the ground for a day or so learning to fly, and that the babies mom was probably close by where they found it. i was so surprised to see it was a baby wood duck! they said a momma duck had been going through the backyards and got in one yard that had dogs! the dogs killed two of the babies, and the momma got away with other ones, and this little darling was trying to get through the fence and the boys grabbed it before the dogs did! unfortunately, they couldn't find momma again! we searched and searched, but couldn't find her. i ended up taking her to a rehabilitator that had 5 other baby wood ducks under a heat lamp. hopefully she survives. i guess wood ducks are especially hard to save, and they do best when with several others. she was sooo cute and those little webbed feet were too cute!

OMG! What a cutie! Do you have a wildlife service in your area? There are people in my area that specialized in taking care of fledglings and injured wildlife. Hope you succeed! Sorry I can't give you first hand experience! I'll say a prayer!
oh nancy! hi sweetie! yes we have several specialist in our area and dear daisy is in the loving care of one of them! thanks for the prayers for her. the lady thought she had probably just been hatched within 48 hours! broke my heart listening to her peep peep peep for her mommy! hugs to you sweet friend:)

Duh! I didn't read your story all the way through! I was so mesmerized by Daisy's video that I didn't get that you had already taken her to a rehab place! I'll read more carefully next time! LOL!
oh hon! i fully understand about missing part of the story! her little video is so enchanting! by the way, when my hubby came home i excitedly told him i had found a baby duck, just assuming it was a mallard, at least, it looked like the baby mallards i have seen. he pointed out the pink on the tip of its bill to identify it as a wood duck!! hugs:)
Daisy is so lucky you wandered into her little life! What a cutie pie! I do hope she makes it. Good job on those boys part...quick thinking! :)
